Groundhog’s Day!

I have lots of blogging catch up to do!  Here are the fun things that we did for Groundhog’s Day this week!

First, we made a prediction about whether or not our furry little groundhog friend will see his shadow! Although we do know that in ND, it really makes no difference at all…case in point: Thursday,Friday and Saturday upper 20s to low 30s. Today: blizzard.

Here is our sweet little groundhog book for the week! I have a feeling there is going to be nothing fancy next week – this week was WAAAAYYYYY to busy with Groundhog’s Day, 100th Day, and getting ready for conferences!

We also made a prediction in our groundhog book on whether our not Mr. Phil will see his shadow.  Click on the picture to download this sheet!

We made this absolutely adorable graph from Kim Adsit’s Groundhog Day Pack.  I wonder why the children like the warm weather best? It was only –17 on Tuesday…..

And a close-up of the cuteness.

And then we analyzed our data.

We learned this song/poem from Cara Carrol’s Groundhog Day pack.  I picked a few activities from each of Kim’s and Cara’s packs and we worked on them over the first 2 days of the week.

This is also from Cara’s pack – I just made it in to an IWB activity instead of using it as a center.  First we sorted the pictures in the correct spot, then we went back to our spots and wrote the words in the correct spaces.  I had the words hidden behind one of the groundhog’s, so as I pulled them out the children stretched the words and told me where to put them

I also made Kim’s animal coverings activity into a flipchart page – we did the same thing – first sorted the pictures (you can see them in the bottom left corner) and then sorted the words.

The chidlren walked around the classroom with 6” rulers and found items that were longer, shorter, and the same as a groundhog’s tail.  This is from Kim’s pack as well.

We learned about compound words. (From Kim)

First we read this book: (sorry for the bad picture!)

And then we built the compound words together on the IWB while the children worked in their own books.

We watched this youtube video and learned lots of great facts about Groundhogs.

and this cute little video just for fun:

Thanks for the links from Really Roper!

And read this non-fiction book:

We completed a tree map together listing the facts that we learned:

Did you know that groundhogs whistle when there is danger?

  1. First and foremost, I want to thank you for your amazing inspirational ideas for continuing the education of our K children! I was also wondering if you would be willing to share what you do for parent/teacher conferences- i am in my fourth year of teaching K and have not found a great format to follow- do you have anything that you could share on your blog? THank you so much!

  2. I love how you made the IWB activities from Cara's GH unit. We just got our IWBoards, not very familiar with them. How did you do it?

  3. Kim's unit is ADORABLE!!! You know I want to see your penguin stuff though. ;) ha ha
I don't think my smartboard will let me manipulate items that are in a pdf file! (sigh)
